School Vision Screening
Our club is now participating in a national Lions programme offering free vision screening for young people to help identify potential vision defects. This initiative primarily targets primary school children in reception and first year, though it is not limited to this group. Using a PlusOptix S20 vision screening camera, the process is simple: the child just looks at the camera face for a few seconds, and the device promptly indicates either a pass or refer message.
Parents must provide consent before their child is tested and will then receive a letter with the results. If the result suggests a referral, we advise parents to consult a qualified optician, as we are not qualified to make diagnoses ourselves. The screening is particularly important for this age group because the camera can detect conditions such as 'lazy eye'. Early detection allows for effective treatment, whereas after the age of seven, treatment tends to be less successful. The camera can also identify other potential vision issues.
National evidence shows that some pupils behave better and achieve improved results, especially in reading, after eye tests. If you believe your child may benefit from an eye test, we encourage you to visit a local optician for a free assessment, as children who have only experienced poor eyesight may not realise how quickly their quality of life can improve.
Our club presently working with schools in the Thirsk area. If you are connected with a school and would like to arrange a vision screening session with the Lions, please use the contact form on our website to get in touch.
If you are reading this and think that is a good idea, how can I help, then we would love to hear from you. We need some more people to come forward and join our club.
For this project you will need to become a full member of Lions, hold enhanced Lions DBS check, and have spare time during the day. The more volunteers we have got the more effective our service projects become. Just contact us.
